Now that you know the history of the dining room table, perhaps you are interested in collecting one as an antique! We work with many customers who invest much time, effort and money in buying the perfect antique dining room table. I'd like to share some top-tips that we have learned over the years, on best practices for purchasing an antique dining room table:
1) Hunt for the right antique dealer: Make sure the dealer is reputable. Do some research on Google to see what people have said through out blogs about this dealer. Unfortunately, there are dealers out there who will take advantage of a novice antique collector.
2) Pay attention to age: Many antique dealers will try to pawn off a 50-year old table as an antique. True antique dining room tables should really date back at least 90 years. If you need to call in an outside appraiser, do so.
3) Make sure you love the look: Just because a table is an antique, does not mean it is beautiful! Make sure you and your family like the details and designs - after all, you will be living with it every day. Make sure the look of the table fits your design goals. Remember, just like there are people today who have disagreeable design tastes, there were people hundreds of years ago who had bad taste too :)!
While finding the perfect dining room table antique can be a long process, it is well worth the energy. We have so much experience in working with antique tables, so if you have any questions or need advice, do not hesitate to contact us!!
